Backyard Oasis Paver Patio

This backyard transformation started with a sloped, unusable lawn and became a fully finished outdoor living space. We installed a large rectangular paver patio with a defined edge border, built-in steps down from the back door, and a separate landing pad for the grill area. The base was excavated to 8 inches and compacted with class II fill before setting the pavers in a running bond pattern. Drainage was addressed by grading away from the foundation throughout.
Built for the Long Haul
Every material on this job was chosen for durability in Michigan's freeze-thaw cycle. The pavers are a 3cm porcelain-look concrete product rated for cold climates, set on a screened stone bedding layer over the compacted base. The step risers were cut on-site for a tight, consistent fit. No polymeric sand shortcuts — joints were filled and sealed properly on the final day. The homeowner has a patio that will look the same in ten years as it does today.
